Care that grows up with your child

Children change fast, and so do their health questions. Seeing the same family practice from childhood through the teen years means someone already knows your child’s history, growth and vaccine record when something new comes up. Parents and grandparents can be seen here too, which makes it easier to keep the whole household on track.

Well-child checkups

Checkups are for healthy children, not just sick ones. They’re the time to track growth and development, catch problems early, check the vaccine record and ask about anything on your mind, from sleep and eating to behavior and school. A checkup usually covers:

  • Height, weight and how your child is growing over time
  • A full physical exam
  • Development and milestones for your child’s age
  • A check of which vaccines are due, with a prescription to have them given at your pharmacy
  • Your questions, and, for older children and teens, their own

Texas Health Steps checkups

Texas Health Steps is the Medicaid checkup program for children and young people in Texas, and we provide Texas Health Steps checkups here. We accept the Texas Health Steps (THSteps) Medical Plan, along with traditional Medicaid and several Medicaid health plans; check the full list. Bring your child’s Medicaid card to every visit.

Sick visits and minor injuries

When your child wakes up with a fever, an earache or a cough that won’t settle, or comes home from practice with a sprain, a same-day urgent care visit means seeing a practice that already has their record.

School forms and vaccines

Bring the school, camp or team form to a physical and the doctor completes it after the exam, including the vision and hearing checks most forms ask for. We don’t give vaccines in the clinic: if any are due, you’ll leave with a prescription so they can be given at your pharmacy, and the record comes back to your child’s file.

If a grandparent, relative or caregiver will bring your child, fill in the authorization to treat a minor ahead of time. Families without insurance are welcome as self-pay patients.

Bring to your child’s visit

  • Your child’s insurance or Medicaid card
  • Their vaccination record
  • A list of any medicines they take, including over-the-counter ones
  • Any school, camp or sports form that needs completing
  • A note of questions, so nothing is forgotten in the room

Common questions

What age do you start seeing children?

From birth. V-Care sees patients from newborns through the teen years and on into adulthood, so a child never has to change practices as they grow. Book a checkup, sick visit or physical in the usual way.

Do you accept Texas Health Steps?

Yes. We provide Texas Health Steps checkups and accept the Medicaid THSteps Medical Plan, as well as traditional Medicaid and several other Medicaid plans. Bring your child’s Medicaid card to the visit.

How often does my child need a checkup?

Babies and toddlers need checkups more often, while older children and teens usually need one a year. Your doctor will tell you when the next one is due.

Can a grandparent bring my child to an appointment?

Yes, with your written permission. Fill in the authorization to treat a minor before the visit, and have the adult bring their photo ID.
